RUBBER BOOT FILMS
This is a
list of the films that I know about that contain scenes of guys wearing
rubber wellington boots or waders/hipboots. I would be happy to

Us the
Waves
(1955) A British black and white war film
starring John Mills about a special naval force
trained to operate mini-submarines.
Many of the cast wear turned down
wellies throughout and some are shown in waders. It's one
of those films which turn up on
British daytime TV.
Alaska Seas (1953)
Starring Robert Ryan. A film about the
owner of a salmon cannery in
Alaska
who
hires a man who had formerly been his partner, and comes to regret it. A lot of the characters spend a lot of time
in hip boots and there is generally more rubber in this film than any
other
Alexandre
Le Bienheureux (1967) A French film starrring
Phillipe Noiret as a farmer who prefers sleep to work. After his wife
dies he takes to his bed for good. He becomes entranced by a
beautiful young woman and proposes marriage but he balks at the altar
and retreats back to his previous life. The farmer wears rubber
boots all the time.
Alligator (1980) A film
about an baby alligator that gets
flushed down the toilet and grows to an enormous size.
There are some shots of rubber boot clad men
in the sewers searching for the alligator and a piece of tantalising
dialogue
of a young policeman ordered to search the sewers insisting that he
will need a
pair of rubber boots for this dirty job.
And God
Spoke (1994) Two wannabee moviemakers in Hollywood, are
looking to
break into big time. Utterly talentless but eager, they hit upon making
a movie
about the Bible because of its built in audience.
In a scene of Jesus walking on the water, a
hip booted stage hand goes out to test the depth of the water.
Assassins
(1995) Starring Sylvester Stallone and Antonia Banderas. Sylvester Stallone is a seasoned
hitman who just wants out of the business with no back talk. But Antonio Banderas, a younger
assassin is having a field day trying to kill said older
assassin. In the opening scene Sylvester Stallone is in black knee high
rubber boots walking along with his target in a swamp. The
victim turns to him eand says no wonder you are wearing rubber
boots. It is only during the start of the film however that there
is emphasis on Stallone's rubber boots and they are on full view
until the end of the opening scene.

Whale for
the Killing (1981)
TV Film with Richard Widmark. When a whale
is discovered in a town’s lagoon, the hero sets out to save its life.
The film contains some rubber booted men.
Backdraft
(1991)
Starring Kurt
Russell and Robert de Niro. A story
about firemen, their fights amongst themselves and their loved ones. The film seems tailor made for lovers of
rubber hip boots. The
boots (and the men) are all big and in
full black rubber boots and gear .

Bayo (1985)
A
Canadian made film set
in the Maritimes and featuring many
characters clad in rubber knee boots and rolled down hip boots. One character, Squid, never appears without
them. The film also features the “Rubber
Boot Song”.
Brubaker (1980)
Starring Robert Redford. A film about a
prison governor trying to sort
out corruption in his prison. There is a
scene towards the end with Redford
and the
prisoners in rubber knee boots digging a field looking for bodies.
Buried on
Sunday (1992) A Canadian made film about a
fishing village which responds to
government cutbacks by declaring independence. The gorgeous young star
appears
in rolled down hip boots while playing mini golf, plus a few other
distance
shots of boots.
Call of the Wild (2000)
A video
filmed in Canada in
the country around Montreal.
There are two lengthy scenes which feature gorgeous men in
rubber boots.
Cannery Row (1982) Starring Nick Nolte
& Debra Winger. An offbeat romantic
comedy about a pair of
mismatched lovers. Quite a few scenes of Nolte in his hip-boots.
Captains
Courageous
(1937) Starring Spencer Tracy, Freddie Bartholemew and Mickey Rooney. A famous old film set primarily on a
Portuguese fishing vessel. There are
lots of shots of rubber clad fishermen and, at that time child star,
Freddie
Bartholemew in hip boots.
Car
Wash (1976) Starring Richard Pryor . The
film is about a bunch of guys working in a car wash who have all manner
of strange people coming to their car wash. Most of the scenes have some of the workers wearing black
rubber wellingtons and there is a scene with the son of the boss
getting soaked as he walks through the brushes and he is wearing rubber
boots in that scene.
China Seas1935)
Starring Clark
Gable. Clark Gable
is the skipper of a
tramp; steamer sailing the China
seas and fights Malay pirates. Gable is hip booted throughout most of
the film
and collapses on his bunk in them.
City on Fire (1978) Starring Ava
Gardner, Henry
Fonda and Shelley Winters.
A disaster movie with firemen in rubber hip boots attempting to
put out
the fires. There is one excellent scene
where an injured fireman is lifted by his boot tops onto a stretcher.
The
Closer You Get (2000) This light comedy conerns the
men of a small Irish village who bemoan the lack of attractive
eligible women in their town and so they put an advert in a Miami
newspaper. Then to the amusement of the local womenfolk they sit
back and await the arrival of their potential brides. Lots
of the men wear rubber boots as they go about their daily affairs.
Day of the Triffids (1962) Starring Howard
Keel.
There are a few shots of
an older man strutting about in a full-length
raincoat and knee high rubber boots.
Before long he is struck down and killed. His
companion hoists him above his shoulder to
carry him home and at this point you see quite a good shot of the
stiff’s
boots.
Delicatessan
(1991) A post-apocalyptic surrealist
black comedy about the landlord of an aparment building who creates
cannibalistic meals for his odd tenants.
It contains extended scenes from the sewers where the ‘villains’
are
dressed in heavy industrial rubber suits, boots and masks.
Faites
Sauter la Banque (1964) A French film starring the
comedian Louis de Funés who is shopkeeper who thinks he has been
drefrauded by the Bank and plans to rob it by diggiing a
tunnel. He wears rubber boots when he is digging the tunnel.
Ghostbusters
ll
(1989) Starring Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd and Sigourney
Weaver. Ths staff of Ghostbusters are at it again and has three
of the team going into the sewers in waders and oilskins and coming out
covered in grunge.
The
Good Life (in
US Good Neighbours) (1975) A
British sit-com concerning a man and his wife who turn their Surbiton home into a
self-sufficient farm-cum-allotment, growing their own food, keeping
animals and making their own tools and equipment. They
are both in rubber knee boots most of the time.
The
Great Escape
(1963) Starring Steve Macqueen and Richard Attenborough.
Several hundred Allied POWs plan a mass escape from
a German POW camp via a tunnel. One
character is frequently seen in turned down rubber boots
Guns
of Navarone (1961) Starring Gregory Peck,
David Niven, Anthony Quinn and Stanley Baker. A classic
British second
world war film
about a British team sent to cross occupied Greek territory and destroy
a massive German gun emplacement that commands a key sea channel.
Towards the end there is a long scene where the team is climbing up a
rock face wearing rubber boots.
Hard
Rain (1998) Starring Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater.
Christian Slater is an armored truck guard who
gets robbed by Morgan Freeman. It has police in raingear and
rubber boots.
Hell
Drivers (1957) Starring Stanley
Baker and Patrick McGoohan. A British
film about truck drivers driving ballast lorries. Most of the truck
drivers
wear turned down rubber boots all the time.
I
know what you did last summer (1997) Adaptation of Lois Duncan's thriller about four teenagers
trying to cover up a hit-and-run. It has fishermen in rubber
boots and oilskins.
I
love huckabees (2004)
Starring Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jude Law and Mark Wahlberg.
A comedy in which, determkned to solve
the coincidence fo seeing the
same conspicuous stranger three times a day, Albert hires a pair of
existentialist detectives who insist on spying on his everyday life
while sharing their views on life and the nature of the universe.
There is a scene where where a number of men are carrying furniture all
wearing turned down rubber hipboots. In that scene you see Mark
Wahlberg come out of the house and put on a pair of turned down
hipboots which he does no take off throughtout the whole film.
Jaws
(1975) The famous Steven Spielberg film about
a gigantic great white whale
which
begins to menace the small island community of Amity and a police
chief, a marine scientist and grizzled fisherman set out to stop
it. Roy Scheider turns up at the boat fully dressed in marine
blue PVC rainwear and rubber boots... and Robert Shaw replies... "I see
you've got your rubber"
La Grand Seduction
(Seducing Dr Lewis) (2003) A Canadian French language film which
concerns the efforts of a ragtag
fishing
community on a tiny, impoverished island who must persuade a young
Montreal-based doctor to
live in their town in order to get a much-needed new factory.
Many of the inhabitants are fishermen and wear rubber boots.
La
Horse (1970) Starring Jean Gabin. A French
film. Jean Gabin is a grumpy old farmer who rules his family with
a rod of iron. When he finds
his son has
been hiding drugs for
the mob, he hides the drugs (and his son) and when members of the gang
come looking for it, he kills them. The characters on the farm
all wear rubber boots most of the time.
Le Beau Serge (1958)
A French film directed by Claude Chabrol. The film, which
has a gay undercurrent, concerns two friends who meet after many years
absence when one of them returns to his hometown and learns that his
childhood friend - a man he admires - has become an drunk and he
jepordises his own health to save him. The drunk is a truck
driver who is always in rubber boots.
Le Boucher (1970) A
French film directed by Claude Chabrol. Butcher Popaul meets
schoolteacher Helene at a marriage in a small rural French village.
They become friends. But girls are murdered in the area and Helene
finds on the scene the lighter she offered to Popaul. The Butcher
Popaul wears rubber boots throughout the film.
Les
Grandes Geules
(Jailbirds' Vacation) (1967)
A French film starring Bourvil and Lino Ventura. A pleasant
leisurely comedy drama about some ex-convicts who are hired by a
failing timber sawmill and eventually help the sawmill to
survive. The ex-cons wear rubber boots al the time.
Life is a Miracle
(2004). A film directed by Emir Kusturica. A love story set
during the war in Yugoslavia. The main character wears
rubber boots at the end of the film.
The Longest Yard (1974)
Starring Burt Reynolds. not to be confused with the remake
in 2005. A sadistic prison
warden asks a
former American football pro quarterback, now serving time in his
prison, to
put together a team of inmates to take on the guards.
The second half of the film consists almost
entirely of the game of American football but about 20 minutes into the
film,
convict Burt Reynolds and some of the other prisoners splash about in
the mud
in knee high rubber boots during which there is also a great scene of
Reynolds
and one of the other prisoners dumping mud and slime down into each
other’s
rubber boots.
The Man with
Two Brains
(1983) Starring Steve
Martin & Kathleen Turner. There are
two very brief, but tantalizing, shots of a gardener outside Turner’s
window
working in hip waders.
Masquerade (1988) A
recently orphaned millionairess,
Olivia, really hates her scheming step-father and finds love with a
young yacht
racing captain. Towards the very end
there is a shot of a fireman with fully extended hip boots.
Mildred
Pierce (1945) After her cheating husband leaves her, Mildred Pierce proves
she can become independent and successful, but can't win the approval
of her spoiled daughter. In the first 5/10 minutes a Californian policeman appears in a real
downpour wearing a great rubber coat over a leather police
jacket. I can't remember if he wears rubber or leather boots, but he is
such a sexy looking number it is almost unimportant.
Nous
etions un seul homme (We
were one man) (1979) A French film which takes
place in 1943 in France. A French farmer who is about to be
married finds a wounded German soldier and takes him home to nurse
him. The discover a mutual attraction which leads to an intense
relationship. Many of the Frenchmen wear rubber boots.
Orca
the Killer Whale
(1977) Starring Richard Harris and Bo Derek. An
epic struggle between a strong and determined fisherman and
an equally determined
whale. It takes a while but
the hip boots finally come out and are worn steadily throughout the
final third
of the film.
The
Perfect Storm
(2000) Starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg. A true life
drama in
which a sword-fishing-boat Captain and his crew are caught in a freak
storm
which eventually destroys the boat. The Captain and crew wear rubber
hip boots
and yellow oilskins for most of the film
Peter
Grimes The opera by Benjamin Britten concerning a
rough fisherman and his apprentice. Peter Grimes and other appear
in hipboots and rubber boots from time to time. Various versions
are available on DVD.
Ring
of Bright Water
(1969) A cute, cuddly pet shop
otter
captures the heart of Graham Merill. It doesn't take Graham long to
realize
that London is no place to raise a
slippery
otter so he takes it to live in a ramshackle cottage on the coast of Scotland. Most rubber boot shots are black knee boots
but there is also one scene containing turned down hip boots.
The
River (1984) Starring Mel
Gibson & Sissy Spacek. A film about
two farmers who fight to retain
their farm when bankers, real
estate agents, and nature itself
threaten to destroy their way of life.
There are quite a few scenes of Mel
Gibson in a full length
raincoat and knee high rubber boots battling a raging flood.
Run
of the Country (1995) Starring Albert
Finney. A film about life in a
small Irish market town. It has several
shorts of guys in rubber knee boots
Saturday
Night and Sunday
Morning (1960) Starring Albert Finney. The life and loves of a
brawling, boisterous factory
worker stuck in a dreary industrial city in the English midlands. In
one scene
Albert Finney is wearing rolled down hip boots at the local fishing
hole.
Scarecrow (1973)
Starring Al Pacino & Gene Hackman. This buddy
picture
contains a short sequence with Pacino
working at a car wash, clad in awkward rubber boots.
The Secret (1992)
Starring Kirk Douglas.
Michael Dunmore has lived his whole life with
a secret which he believed would only cause shame if it came to light.
Good
looking Bruce Boxleitner appears in hip high boots wading through
cranberry
marshes
The
Sleeping Tiger (1954) Starring Dirke
Bogarde. A lame and unintersting film. However there is one brief scene where Alexis
Smith attempts to seduce Dirk Pogarde, who is reclining on his bed
still clad
in his hip high rubber boots that he has been fishing in.
Southern
Comfort (1981)
A squad of National Guards on an isolated weekend exercise in
the Louisiana
swamps must
fight for their lives when they anger local Cajuns by stealing their
canoes. There is lots of rubber in the
Cajun swamps of Louisiana
but the photography is so dark that it is sometimes difficult to see
the rubber
boots.
Spawn of the North (1938) Starring George Raft
& Henry Fonda. A black and white film
shot In the rugged glacial
wilderness of Alaska
where battle
lines are drawn between conservationist vigilantes led by an earnest
fisherman
and fish poachers allied with the fisherman's erstwhile best friend. It contains a lgreat deal of wet weather gear
and hip boot action. Apparently it was
the prototype for Alaska Seas (see above)
They
Drive by Night (1938) Starring Emlyn
Williams and Earnest Thesiger. DO
NOT CONFUSE THIS FILM WITH ANOTHER OF THE
SAME NAME STARRING HUMPHREY BOGART AND GEORGE RAFT MADE IN 1940. This British standard
crime drama which
centres on truck drivers,most of whom
walk around for much of the film in turned down rubber boots, takes a
startling
turn into horror in the final reel.
Time
of the Wolf (2002) Starring Burt Reynolds. An
orphaned boy who lives with his aunt and uncle is very unhappy and
makes friends with a young wolf whose life he has saved.. The boy
is in rubber boots most of the time.
Tobruk (1967)
Starring Rock Hudson & George
Peppard. A film about the second world
war in which a Canadian officer, who is an expert topographer, must
negotiate a
company of British and German-Jewish commandos through 800 miles of the
Sahara
to aide a pending amphibious landing against Tobruk's massive fuel
storage
base. Opening scenes contain
several actors clad in skin
tight rubber scuba diving gear.
Toys (1992) Starring Robin
Williams and Michael Gambon. A comedy in which a General takes
control of a toy factory and starts to make the toy soldiers into
wearpons of war. There is a scene in the middle of the film
where two soldiers are camping out and one of them is in rubber
hipboots and the other in chest waderrs.
Two
Weeks Notice (2002) Starring Hugh Grant and Sandra
Bullock. A comedy in which Sandra Bullock is a top flight lawyer
and Hugh Grant is her boss who treats her more like a nanny and makes
her do everything for him. There is one scene when they are on a
building site and are both wearing black knee high rubber boots.
This is the only scene that the rubber boots are on full view.
Un
Taxi Mauve (Purple
Taxi) (1977) Starrimg Peter Ustinov, Charlotte
Rampling, Fred Astaire and Phillipe Noiret, The film is about a
group of expatriates who, for one dark reason or another, have
settled in rural Ireland, there to fall in love and then to hurt or be
hurt, by one another. Two of the main characters spend most of
their free time hunting in the Irish countryside. They both
wear rubber boots, and sometimes hipboots, almost all the time.
Village
of the Damned
(1960) Starring George Sanders. In
the small English village
of Midwich
everybody
falls into a deep, mysterious sleep for several hours in the middle of
the day
and some months later every woman capable of child-bearing is pregnant.
The
children that are born out of these pregnancies have penetrating eyes
that make
people do things they don't want to do.
When the children are outdoors they wear rubber boots most of
the time.
Whisky
Galore (1948)
Starring Basil Radford and Joam Greenwood. A very
funny film where Scottish islanders try
to plunder 50,000 cases of whisky from a stranded ship. There are some
occasional shots of men in rubber knee boots.
Whistle
down the Wind (1961)
Starring Hayley Mills and Alan Bates. Little
Kathy discovers a man wanted for murder hiding in her family's barn.
Kathy and
her siblings are convinced that he is Jesus and try to hide him from
grown-ups. Most of the cast including
the children wear rubber boots most of the time.
White
Fang (1991) Starring Ethan Hawke. Jack
London's classic adventure story about the friendship developed between
a Yukon gold hunter and the mixed dog-wolf he rescues from the hands of
a man who mistreats him. There is a short scene in the middle
where a boy is wearing rubber hipboots.
Who's
Harry Crumb ? (1989)
Starring John Candy. A comedy about a private detective.
The opening shots of the bad guy are of him just in his rubber boots
